Host an Event

Have Fun. Raise Money. End Fistula.

Our supporters are not only generous, they’re incredibly creative too. From small gatherings to big community events, people across New Zealand are finding fun and meaningful ways to raise funds and awareness for Hamlin.

Every dollar raised brings us one step closer to achieving Drs Reg and Catherine Hamlin’s vision - a fistula-free Ethiopia. We’d love you to be part of our wonderful community of fundraisers.

From car boot sales and craft stalls, to trivia nights and bake-offs, there are countless ways to get involved. Host a relaxed morning tea with friends, organise a High Tea, plan a fun run or gather your community for a quiz night, bingo, or movie night.

Whether your event is big or small, simple or ambitious, every effort makes a difference. Most importantly, the funds you raise will help treat and prevent obstetric fistula, and support safer childbirth for women in Ethiopia.

Would you like a speaker for your event?

Joli Wescombe, Chair, Hamlin Fistula New Zealand

Joli is a passionate advocate for women’s maternal health and a former midwife. She has travelled to Ethiopia many times, spending extended time alongside Hamlin midwives in remote communities, and brings a deep, firsthand understanding of the challenges women face and the life-changing impact of Hamlin’s work. Joli is currently completing her PhD, researching midwives as agents of change in improving maternal health outcomes.

If you would like Joli to speak at your event, we would love to work with you. Joli is based in Christchurch and may be available to present in person or online. Please contact us to discuss further.

Benefits of Fundraising

We often hear that it’s better to give than receive, and our fundraisers tell us this couldn’t be more true. There’s something incredibly rewarding about turning your ideas and energy into meaningful support for women in Ethiopia. Knowing your efforts are helping to treat and prevent obstetric fistula, and support safer childbirth, makes every moment worthwhile.

There are other benefits too!

Create Connections

Bring together friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, or local businesses. Fundraising is a wonderful way to connect people around a shared purpose and build a strong sense of community.

Build Understanding

You’re not just raising funds, you’re also raising awareness. By sharing Hamlin’s story, you’ll help others understand the importance of maternal healthcare and the life-changing impact of this work.

Drive Real Change

Every dollar you raise helps treat and prevent obstetric fistula, and supports safer childbirth for women in Ethiopia. You will be one of the people making that happen. Be proud.

We’re Here to Help

Our team is here to support you every step of the way. We’re happy to provide promotional materials, brochures, images, and guidance to help make your event a success. Tips for a Successful Fundraiser

Here are a few simple ideas to help make your event even more successful:

Aim High

Set an ambitious fundraising target for your event. For example, raising $1,600 could provide life-changing surgery for a woman in Ethiopia, restoring their health, dignity, and hope for the future.

Share Your Passion

Take a few moments at your event to explain why you’re supporting Hamlin. Let your guests know what inspired you, suggest a donation amount, and explain how their gift will make a difference. We can provide brochures, presentations, or videos to help you share the story.

Send a Reminder

Remind friends and family about your event and follow up if you haven’t received an RSVP. If someone can’t attend, invite them to support your fundraiser online instead.

Make Social Media Your Friend

Alongside email invitations, send personal messages and share your fundraising link on social media. You might also like to create a Facebook event and share updates in the lead-up. Sharing content from our Hamlin Fistula NZ Facebook page is another great way to raise awareness.

Hold a Raffle

A raffle is a simple way to boost funds on the day. A few quality prizes often work better than many small ones. Selling tickets for $5 each or three for $10 is a popular option.

Get a Little Help from Your Friends

Invite friends and family to help with planning, cooking, decorating, or promotion. Fundraising is more fun when it’s shared, and you’ll reach more people along the way.

Help us give hope to every woman.

Keep up to date with our work including the latest news from our programmes in Ethiopia, ways to get involved and how your support can make a difference.
