My name is Tigist and I am the Women’s Empowerment Program Manager. I have worked with Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia for fifteen years and have witnessed the profound impact of our programs.
I have just welcomed the 19th cohort who will stay for two months. The women enjoy a welcome ceremony that includes nutritious meals, a Comfort Package with a handmade blanket and clean clothing and working uniforms for the training. This initial gesture of care sets a positive tone for their journey.
Key staff members introduce themselves, explain the program’s services and guidelines and facilitate introductions, fostering mutual respect regardless of regional, linguistic or ethnic differences. We promote family involvement in choosing their courses which is essential for mutual support.
The women genuinely enjoy socialising and sharing their stories. It fosters a supportive community and reduces feelings of isolation while promoting motivation, social interaction and communication.
The transformation I observe in women from arrival to departure is significant. Many arrive with low self-esteem and trauma. They leave equipped with new skills, enhanced confidence and a positive outlook, ready to reintegrate into society as empowered individuals leading dignified lives. We maintain contact after women return home and assist them in securing sustainable employment or starting their businesses.
Catherine Hamlin would be proud of this program. It not only honours her legacy but also embodies her vision of holistic care [the Hamlin Model of Care]. So on behalf of everyone at Hamlin, I want to thank you, our donors, for your generosity and support.
