During November 2024 to January 2025, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s clinical team conducted 981 surgeries at Hamlin’s six fistula hospitals in Addis Ababa, Mekele, Yirgalem, Metu, Harar and Bahir Dar. This surpassed the planned target of 956 surgeries, achieving 103% of the goal.
A total of 1,793 patients visited Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s outpatient departments in Addis Ababa and the five regional treatment centres.
The work of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia – a healthcare network of six hospitals, Desta Mender rehabilitation centre and the Hamlin College of Midwives – is funded solely by individual donors, businesses and foundations around the globe. It does not currently receive any USAID funding.
In recent weeks, the US Administration has made a series of sweeping changes to the way USAID operates and has significantly reduced its spend on international development programs. Given the scale of the USAID funding cuts, it is likely that many clinics and services in rural areas of the country will be impacted. As these are the only source of maternal healthcare to women living in remote areas, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia anticipates that there may be a need to scale up the support we are currently providing to these clinics.
As we continue to support mothers and babies, we know you will help us rise to this new challenge. We are ever more appreciative for the commitment of our thousands of supporters around the globe.
