For nearly 40 years, Martha lived with the burden of obstetric fistula.
Now 70, she poured her heart into raising her three children, but her fourth pregnancy changed everything in her life.
A long shadow is cast
During a gruelling three-day labour at home, Martha sustained a devastating birth injury - one that would cast a long shadow over her life. Obstetric fistula left her with incontinence that brought not only physical pain but also a deep sense of shame and isolation.
For nearly 40 years, Martha lived with this burden, avoiding the mosque and social gatherings, fearing judgment from her community.
Martha’s transformation begins
It wasn’t until the dedicated Project Zero team began a house-to-house survey in Didessa Woreda (district) that Martha’s life began to transform. Their mission is clear: to identify and help women suffering from obstetric fistula and related issues.
Martha was found and her fistula injury identified. She was transported to Hamlin’s Metu Fistula Hospital where she was welcomed by the dedicated staff and a community of women who had endured similar childbirth injuries. They shared their stories with her and they fostered a bond that transcended their struggles.
Igniting change
Martha’s fistula repair surgery changed her life. The medical team not only treated her physical condition but also offered emotional support, helping her confront her fears and anxieties.
Following surgery, Martha returned to her village feeling excited and apprehensive. The Project Zero team encouraged her to visit her mosque and, as she stepped inside, the familiar sounds of prayer filled the air and she was greeted with warmth and acceptance.
Martha’s journey is not just about her healing. The village of Didessa has begun to rewrite its story of tolerance and understanding of this horrific, preventable childbirth injury.
